| Do Diet Pills Absolve Responsibility? |
|
Diet pills often come under scrutiny because of various issues. Most of these issues will centre on how safe they are, what type of side effects do they have, how expensive they are, do the manufactures of diet pills act responsibly in their marketing, and finally do diet pills actually work. However there is one important issue that is often overlooked. This issue is, are people who are taking diet pills relieving themselves of responsibility for their own health.
Your body belongs to you, and if something belongs to you, ultimately you are responsible for it. In a world where we are often told by governments, health experts, and celebrities, how we should be and how we shouldn’t be living our lives, we have relinquished control of our own lives. We have become more reliant on others telling us what to do, so that we have lost the ability to make our own decisions regarding our own lives. Diet pills add to that loss of responsibility.
In almost all areas of our lives we have to earn things, and it is only by earning something through time and hard work can we really appreciate and be proud of our achievements. Short term successes are rarely long lasting or appreciated. Taking diet pills to try to lose weight is meant to take away the time and hard work associated with weight loss. It seems so much better and easier to be able to pop some pills on a daily basis, instead of going to the trouble of changing your diet and beginning an exercise program.
The problem with taking diet pills as an easy solution to weight loss is that it is an easy way out, but often because many diet pills don’t deliver what they promise, it is no way out. When diet pills fail to work, the blame is shifted onto the diet pills and not onto ourselves. Once we start looking towards pushing the blame away from ourselves and towards external factors, we begin to shift responsibility.
Life is about experience and learning lessons and you don’t get either from taking diet pills, unless you begin to suffer from many of the serious side effects that come with many diet pills. However that is not the kind of experience or lesson that you would want to have. You learn nothing about nutrition because you have no reason to. If you rely on diet pills to help you reduce weight you learn nothing about the qualities of different foods or what effects they can have on your body.
You learn out nothing about exercise, you don’t learn how to push yourself; you don’t gain any knowledge about the benefits the exercise will have on your body and all round health. If you have been exercising for six months you will understand how hard you may have pushed yourself and you will be proud of you progression and achievements. However taking diet pills will not give you that understanding or experience.
While some diet pills may have an effect on weight loss, they will not make you stronger, they will not make you fitter, they will not increase your lung capacity or strengthen your heart, and they will not have an impact on increasing your energy levels.
Body image is closely linked to mental health. When you exercise and start seeing results over a period of time, you will feel so much better about yourself. Your confidence will be higher and you will have a much better level of self esteem. This is because you would have earned the right to be where you are because of the effort and work you have put in.
Each time we push responsibility away it weakens us because we are giving something away that belongs to us. Having responsibility means having control, give that away and you are giving away the right to controlling your own life. This ultimately results in a drop of self esteem, confidence, and the will power to make your own choices.
When it comes to losing weight you have options to go down certain routes. People rarely achieve anything worthwhile by taking the easy way out. A short cut can often lead you down a much longer road. Ultimately your health is your responsibility, you choose what you put into your body, you choose if you exercise it or not, and you choose to seek medical advice or not. The responsibility rests on your shoulders and by placing that responsibility on external factors you lose control. For lasting weight loss and good health you already know what you need to do. You can put in the time and the work what is required and be proud of having done so, or you can opt for a quick fix that absolves you of any responsibility and will probably lead to failure.
