Protein is an extremely important component of our diet , and its importance cannot be understated. Proteins are made up of various amino acids. Some amino acids can be made by our bodies, while other amino acids have to come from external sources. Amino acids are the building blocks of our bodies.

 

 

The amino acids in protein help to replace and repair tissue in your body. An inadequate amount of protein in your diet will leave you feeling rundown and tired. As an adult, protein is required by virtually every part of your body. As a child protein will help you grow and is necessary for your bones and muscles to grow properly.

 

 

Your protein requirements will vary according to your lifestyle. On average you should be looking to consume 1 gram of protein per kilogram of bodyweight. This amount will serve as a maintenance dose.

 

 

If on the other hand you are physically active or spend a lot of time exercising, your protein requirements will be greater, especially if you are training with weights. You should then be looking to consume between 1.5 - 2 grams of protein per 1 kilogram of bodyweight. This increase is required to repair your muscles and make them bigger and stronger.

 

 

When you train with weights your muscles need more protein to repair the stress that you are putting on them. Depending on the intensity of your training your overall calorie requirements will need increasing. However the majority of these calories will not be stored as fat. They will be used to energise and repair you, enabling you to exercise in a progressive and effective way.

 

 

Protein sources include:

 

Meat

Fish

Eggs

Milk

Cheese

Nuts

Cereals

 

 

It is very important that if you increase your protein intake that you start to drink more water on a daily basis. You should be looking towards drinking 2 litres of water a day. If you are training, then this should be increased by another litre or two. This helps you liver and kidneys to flush out more toxins and also improves your skin, hair, and energy levels.

 

  Amino acids are the building blocks of life,never underestimate the importance of Protein.
