The Road to Fitness is Consistency

Natural talent and good genetics can only take you so far. The most successful road to fitness is consistency. The simple formula is that the more you do of something the better you get at it. This formula applies to most things in life and fitness certainly is not any different. Another great thing about consistency is that it is habit forming; up to the point that whatever you are doing regularly becomes something natural for you.

If you want to become fitter than you are now, do not make the mistake of thinking that working out with various exercises a couple of times a week is going to reap you great rewards. You will need a plan of action. The world is run on plans. Industry, governments, education, and sport all have short term and long term plans to which they are committed. You need to approach your plan in a similar way.

First of all you need to decide how important your health and fitness is to you. If it's not very important to you, then you can stop reading right now and go back to doing what you were doing, because you will only be wasting your time if you continue further.

If on the other hand your health and fitness does mean something then that’s great because you have the personal interest in your future. It is from this interest that your motivation will come from, and motivation is what you will need, because without it you will not progress very far.

Once you have decided that you want to become fitter, you have to decide what it is that you actually want to achieve. Do you want to become stronger, have more endurance and stamina, be more flexible or just have a great body. You can decide to combine different aspects. Whatever it is you want, you can only achieve it if you know what your goal is.

Your next stop will be to decide what types of exercise you are going to do. Now you may not know much about exercise at the present time, but that is not a problem. Do some research on the internet. All you need to do is to type into Google what you actually want. For example if you want to be stronger and more muscular, then just type that in, or if you want higher levels of stamina, then do the same. You will get hundreds if not thousands of sites offering information for free. Pick a few of the higher ranking ones and learn what you want to know.

The next stop is to decide how much time you can commit to your goal. You should be looking towards at least 4-6 hours a week and you will find this time if you are serious about your goal. Keep your training sessions regular so that they become habitual on the days you train. Make sure that the time you set aside for training is used just for that. Do not let anything distract you from what you have to do.

The final and most important step is consistency. Do not miss workouts, if you miss one workout it becomes much easier to miss another one and your consistency will go out of the window. There may be days when you feel extra tired, where you cannot be bothered, or you are looking for anything that will give you and excuse not to train.

Do not worry about this, you are not alone. Some of the worlds greatest athletes have days like this, it is normal to feel that now and again. Let me tell you a little secret. It is easy to workout when you feel good and are motivated and happy to do so. However it is hard to do a workout when you are having a down day. Believe it or not, a down day is a great opportunity for you. Its easy to not do a workout if you are having a down day, but lets say that you do your workout even when you don’t want to, do you have any idea what that means? It means you are disciplined, committed, motivated and your willpower and character is getting stronger. So keep training good days and bad, and you will reap great benefits.
