Your Body, Your Most Valuable Asset

Ask most people what they consider to be the most important and most valuable things in their lives and they will probably give you a list of things which will probably include:

Their Family

Their Career

Their House

Their Car

Certain personal belongings

Their Happiness

There are probably many other things that people could list, but their priorities of what is important and valuable would all be wrong. The most valuable and important possession you have is you. If you weren't here everything else would be pretty meaningless. People treat their cars and homes with more care that they often treat themselves. People put lots of time and effort into their careers and yet put very little time and effort into their own health.

You and your health should be the most important thing in your world because without your health you will be extremely limited as to what you can do or what you can achieve. Many of us do not realise this, or even if we do, we tend to neglect our health. The way many of us look after ourselves is to fill our bodies with junk food full of fat and sugar. We avoid exercise like the plague. We don’t get checked up by a doctor on a regular basis. When the day comes when we are given some bad news about our health, our reaction is often surprise and shock. We can't come to terms or accept how this thing may have happened to us.

This is ironic because of the way we treat ourselves, we are asking for disease and illness and that should not be a shock or surprise. We actually do everything we can to court ill health, and you can guarantee that it will come along. We are not talking about catching a cold or a stomach bug which is going to last a couple of days. I am talking about major life threatening diseases such as cancers, strokes, heart attacks, diabetes, bone disease, and various other ailments.

Often many of these illnesses are not curable and will be something that has to be contained through constant medication. There will be some illnesses that cannot be contained and will be terminal. It is only when faced with such a situation do we realise how important our health is. However you may be in a position where you can no longer do anything about it. You will be left with regret and guilt about what you could have and should have done.

Apart from what you may feel in such a situation, think of what impact this could have on members of your family and close friends. If something was to happen to you, what sort of pain and sorrow would they have to go through? The trouble is if we are not touched by disease or illness, we tend to think that it is something that happens to others and that we are ok. You have some vague thought that you may lose some weight or do something positive for your health, sometime in the future. That future rarely arrives; your vague thought always stays in the future. What you probably don’t realise that while you are doing nothing for your health; you are doing all that you can to ensure that health problems will become a reality.

Another problem is your psychological health; many studies show that physical health is related to mental health. When you have a healthy body you feel so much better about yourself. You have more confidence and self esteem. You area able to manage stress much better and avoid depression. In general you are more positive and happier. Do you really want to find yourself in a position where your life at the every least is going to be restricted? Do you really want to find yourself in a position where your health is completely out of your hands? Do you really want to be in a place where all your choices have run our?

Mark my words, it is not a question of if you get a terrible illness, it is a question of when. You should start looking at your health as your number one priority, because without it you have nothing. Start doing something about it today; don’t wait for the next year. Start eating healthy food and start exercising. You need to treat your most valuable asset with the care it deserves and requires.
